Social entrepreneurship is how individuals or organizations develop, pursue, and fund solutions that address social issues. Such issues may include macro-level problems, such as communication and efficient transfer of funds to micro-level issues, like funding housing, clothing, food, and other essential and non-basic necessities at the household levels within a community (Peredo & McLean, 2006, p. 59). Rotating Savings and Credit Associations (ROSCAs) are among the most essential and prevalent forms of social entrepreneurship because of their role in uniting and assisting individuals within a community. In the documentary, The Banker Ladies, ROSCAs stand out as empowering associations that give households, particularly women, a sense of financial independence through collective self-efficacy, trust, and communal saving. In this view, the current paper examines the role of ROSCAs as a form of social entrepreneurship while reviewing the documentary.
Documentary Summary
The documentary begins with a poignant story of a Haitian Canadian called Franciene Fleur, who went to a local Scotia bank in Scarborough to deposit a $9,000 cheque. Instead of serving him as anyone else would be done, the teller became suspicious, delayed him, and called the police on him. He was handcuffed and taken to the police station on suspicion of having a fraudulent cheque. Later, it turned out that the cheque was legitimate and that he had been a customer at the local bank for over ten years (Hossein, 2021). Scotiabank issued an apology and waived his banking fees for several years. The documentary then delves into the stories of three women who have relied on ROSCAs to not only affordable to house, but also to feed, clothe, and educate their children and family members while improving comfort within households. A common trait among the three women is that they are minority group members, those who benefit the most from social entrepreneurship that targets micro-level socioeconomic problems.
Key Lesson(s)
The opening story in the documentary highlights one of the many problems faced by minority groups like immigrants living in a foreign land. It highlights that individuals from underrepresented groups cannot conduct mundane activities of daily living like banking without being assumed to be suspicious. In other words, it was unbelievable for the teller that a person of color could deposit that kind of money. The only way such a person could have that amount was through fraud, not hard work or a legal business transaction. This highlights systemic discrimination that works to marginalize and exclude minority groups from mundane acts like depositing cheques, borrowing loans, and other personal banking activities.
