Dear Future Self,
Reflecting on completing this philosophy course, I feel transformed and as though I have matured. This semester's topics have expanded my intellectual horizons and significantly impacted how I conduct my life, perceive the world, and perceive myself. I want to explain how this course has affected my path.
Our talks of Plato's "Apology" and "Meno" from the outset pushed me to critically evaluate my views and behaviour. Socrates' unrelenting search tremendously moved me to knowledge and truth, encouraging me to live a more reflective lifestyle (Shero, 1927). I have grown more conscious of my prejudices and presumptions and continually challenge them to understand better who I am and the world around me.
The "Meditations" of Descartes inspired me to investigate life's essence and knowledge's veracity. His skepticism taught me to approach ideas and notions with a healthy dose of skepticism and to value critical thought and logic (Bordner & Nelson, 2008). My information processing has changed due to my increased doubt, which has prompted me to look for proof and weigh opposing viewpoints before developing views.
Our investigation of the social contract theory, mainly through the works of Hobbes, Locke, and Mills, has profoundly altered my understanding of society and government. I now comprehend the necessity of a just and equitable society and the significance of shared accountability (Seabright et al., 2021). This information has increased my ability to partake in conversations about political and social issues actively. I now strive to better my community and promote equal rights and opportunities for all individuals.
Studying ethical theories such as utilitarianism and Kantian ethics has substantially impacted my moral judgments and decisions. Particularly, Mill's utilitarianism has inspired me to prioritize the greater good over personal gain by prompting me to consider how my actions influence the well-being of others (Mallia, 2014).
