Interpersonal communication denotes communication involving two or more persons. It incorporates the exchange of ideas between people. Communication occurs verbally and nonverbally (Hardjati & Febrianita, 2019). Various principles, alongside self-concept and perception, influence communication among parties.
Embracing active listening, assertiveness, and empathy can be interpersonal communication principles that can significantly support a new worker. Firstly, active listening includes giving a speaker ultimate attention, comprehending their message, and reacting accordingly (Chatzinikola, 2021). This is critical because it helps generate trust and promote open communication, improving personal and professional connections. Secondly, assertiveness is an aspect that permits people to convey their feelings, thoughts and needs respectively, enabling effective and clear communication (Ames et al., 2017). The principle can easily empower the new worker to communicate their concerns and ideas, positively influencing personal and professional engagements. Thirdly, empathy is the capacity to acknowledge, understand, and share another individual’s feelings, allowing a sympathetic and supportive setting in the workplace (Riess, 2017). Being empathetic will allow the new employee to develop better rapport with colleagues and managers, resulting in solid connections.
Self-concept may refer to a person’s awareness of themselves, including their abilities, values, identity, and beliefs (Showers et al., 2015). It is also a person’s mental picture of their appearance and personality, influenced by social engagements, self-evaluations, and personal experiences. The concept affects how people perceive themselves in different scenarios, impacting their self-esteem, behavior, and confidence. It shapes feelings or thoughts toward others and their environment, defining relationships. A positive self-concept can result in healthier interpersonal communication since persons with more self-esteem are increasingly likely to communicate their attitudes confidently. However, a negative one may unquestionably delay communication, causing self-doubt and unwillingness to engage others openly.
