The Importance of Intuition and Rational Decision-Making in Organizations
Often, people use words like intuition or gut feeling when explaining their decisions or how they feel about something. Intuition is the ability to understand a situation or phenomenon without the need for rational or conscious reasoning. On the other hand, gut feeling is an immediate feeling or reaction without a logical rationale. In his book Blink, Malcolm Gladwell introduces the concept of thin-slicing to explain how intuition or gut feeling works and whether the outcomes are reliable. Thin slicing, or the power of the glance, is the ability to immediately see and make sense of a situation or problem without relying on rationality through reason (Gladwell, 2005, p. 45). While the concept of thin-slicing or intuition is used day-to-day, and often unconsciously, by the average person, it seems as though using it in making decisions in organizations is a gamble that managers and leaders seldom take. Instead, they rely on rational thinking or reasoning, where there is sufficient evidence to support decisions. However, intuition and rational decision-making should work hand in hand to complement each other in enhancing the decision-making process.
