The debate on the relationship between genetics and criminology has been ongoing since the inception of criminology. As per recent studies, some violent individuals are predisposed genetically to the violent behaviors. For instance, according to Farrington (2014), the mutations of monoamine oxidize A structural gene results to a series of neurotransmitters associated with flight and response to stressful situations. Most criminologists do not disregard the genetic characteristics in determining who commits a crime, but they believe a genetic issue may predispose aggressive actions. However, genetics cannot make one to commit a crime (Rocque et al., 2012). Thus, solely considering biological characteristics in criminology would thus be unfair to the victims.
Initially, criminologists were for the idea that genetics solely dictated an individual’s criminal tendencies. The argument is biased, although there is a high realization that genetics may influence the act of criminal offending. The ideology does not require the criminologists to determine potential offenders right from birth.
