Childhood Research Paper Assignment: Images of Child Labor
The United States has a long history of child labor. As an agricultural society, it was expected that children would work on the farm as soon as they were able. When societies industrialized, at first it seemed only “natural” that children would go to work to earn a wage. It wasn’t until relatively recently that we shifted our ideas about childhood from children being “miniature adults” to our current view of childhood as time to be cherished. Eventually, around the later part of the 19th century, labor reformers became concerned about the long hours and dangerous working conditions for all workers but especially for children.
What comes to mind when you think of child labor? Is it something of the past? Does it occur somewhere “far away”? What are the causes and what are the solutions to ending child labor?
