Patriarchal Bargains
Patriarchal bargains describes the various strategies that women use to deal with various different forms of patriarchy that exist in the society. Notably, the various bargain that women adopt are within the constraints of their class, caste, or ethnicity and have a marked role in shaping the gendered subjectivity of a given woman (Kandiyoti, 1988). Patriarchal bargain also play a role in determining the various active and passive form of resistance to patriarchy in their immediate environment. In the following essay, three ways in which women make patriarchal bargain for their well-being and autonomy are compared and contrasted.
One common patriarchal bargain that women accept for their wellbeing is subservience. In this form of bargain, a woman submits to the power of patriarchy in exchange for the likelihood that they will gain control of the household (Kandiyoti, 1988). Submission is mainly accompanied with the control over offspring in exchange to subservience to the husband. Notably, the use of submission may not be effective in the workplace given that each employee is expected to make individual contributions.
