Herder’s View on Shakespearean Work
Herder was of the opinion that the world is dynamic and cultures, as well as its reflection in literature, will always be different. Herder faulted those who criticized Shakespeare for neglecting Aristotelian genre-purpose and rules if he has to be regarded as a great thinker. Herder recognized the contribution of ancient Greek philosophers and their thinking, but urged the people and critics to focus on analyzing modern literature by new standards not hinged on the ideologies of the past.
