DNA testing plays a major role in conviction; 70percent of recent convictions were overturned using DNA testing (Innocence Project, 2016). Eyewitnesses’ statements have led to wrongful convictions due to misidentification. The recent policy reforms adopted include five simple procedures that have proven to be a cheaper method that would help reduce false identification.
Innocence Project (2016) presents the five procedures the first being blind administration; the process involves a police officer not being aware of the suspect in the lineup hence preventing a suggestive statement that might influence the witness. The lineup is the second procedure; lineup composition involves non-suspects; a suspect presented in the first lineup cannot be presented in another lineup. The third procedures is the instruction procedure, this involves informing the eyewitness that the suspect can be or not possibly be included in the lineup and failing to identify the suspects will not be the end of the investigation.
