There are a number of definitions of what a GIS is. In 150 words or less write a definition of GIS that would help explain it to a person who is not familiar with mapping or GIS technology. I would like the definition to be conversational so please do not use a textbook definition. You might find the videos and examples from the textbook helpful when creating your definition

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are a set of computer systems that can be used to bring together sets of seemingly unrelated data specific to a geographic region for analysis. These sets of data can include but are not limited to: maps, aerial photographs, satellite and drone imagery, population density, topography, transportation routes and roads, and tourism surveys and studies. As Tobler said back in 1970, “everything is related to everything else.” (Tobler,1970) Using these various data sets, analysts can determine correlations between them, if they are relevant or useful in planning for a project or surveying the geographic area in question for numerous applications.

GIS (Geographic Information System) is a data system used by humans to analyze, update, collect, and store spatial data information about the Earth’s geography. This software system adds value to spatial data by using geographical references, connectivity details, and non-spatial information. As a result, users and programmers gain the ability to input and manage data, as well as transform data over time as we learn more about geographical areas. The GIS can be modeled by using either a objective or layered approach. GIS can be used in a layer-based approach, which identifies various factors, information, and details about a given geographical point or location. It can also be used in an object-oriented approach, which can be represented by considering space that is populated by specific objects. This systems functionality is reliant on it’s hardware, software, and data components, as well as users’ implementations and systems operations.

Geographical Information System
The earth surface is a massive resource and one that has a lot of data to analyze. To do this, there is need for analytical strategies that best visualize the data in question, help formulate queries, analyze it and interpret the data (Ordnance Survey, 2017). Referred to as Geographical information systems, this is a way of working with data found on the spatial earth surface to make interpretations on the same about the past present and even the future (Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 2017). The applications of GIS information are thus quite wide and some are still under development, especially with the advent of technological abilities that had not been discovered in the past (Dempsey, 2012). For example, is it possible to have GIS information at the touch of the fingers on a miniature mobile device such as a watch and establish the location of a site millions of miles away at the comfort of sofa or office desk (Grindgis.com, 2017). Accessing satellite resources is much easier with technology and so are GIS applications (National Society, 2017).
