In the DSM-5, Gambling Disorder was moved from the “Impulse Control Disorders” category to the “Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders” category. Do you think that this was a good decision? Why or why not?
Robin
Previously pathological gambling (PG) now gambling disorder was classified together with the impulse control disorders, but scientific literature increasingly shows that PG shares similarities with the Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders. Like substance abuse, there are cravings and stimulus that affect how they respond to gambling, and exhibiting compulsive behavior shows that gambling may co-occur with other addictions (Clark, 2014). The definition and classification of the substance-related and addictive disorders the gambling highlight the process and behavior or addictions.

The decision to classify gambling disorders under the Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders category is the right decision, since the classification process considers the features that are common in addiction disorders. Gamblers use money compulsively and are excited when they gamble more while those with substance abuse use more alcohol or drugs and the two disorders shows similarities (Rash, Weinstock & Van Patten, 2016). Additionally gamblers lose control because of their compulsive behavior and these results in them risking a lot to try to satisfy their cravings or fixation.
