Sociologists state that families are social institutions comprising people who share material, emotional, or even economic resources. Family formations arise out of marriage, genetics and others out of choice. More often we encounter people who are not related by blood but consider themselves family since their family unit is formed through choice; the choice to be friends. Indeed, for many people, family is a matter of choice. This includes a couple that decides to adopt children and care for them. One distinct feature that defines a family is the obligation to care for each other. These obligations are sometimes referred to as the functions of the family. The three primary functions of a family include providing emotional care to their other family members (Crash Course, 2017). This includes showing them love and comfort whenever needed. Secondly, family units are obliged to provide economically for their family members.
