The process of redistricting in the United States is allowed under specific criteria. Through these criteria, the districts are easy to identify (NCSL, 2019). Also, the process of redistricting becomes fair and consistent. All states are required to comply with the constitutional requirements provided on redistricting. For congressional redistricting, the requirements are under Article 1, Section 2 of the constitution. For state legislative districts, the requirements are found under the 14th Amendment. In addition to these standards, states can adopt their redistricting criteria (NCSL, 2019). This paper describes the redistricting criteria or principles that should guide Florida's legislature during the next legislative session.
One of the principles is compactness. When redistricting, the Florida legislature should ensure a minimum distance between all parts of a constituency.
