Education is always a controversial issue in Florida because of the policies and programs put in place to improve quality education. Unfortunately, these policies and programs have been viewed differently by some Democrats and Republicans, making them the source of debate on education matters. For two decades, Florida has been seen as the State most willing to make education reforms aimed at improving student outcomes (Dailey, 2021). One of the reforms that have raised controversy is the Florida Bright Futures scholarship program created in 1997 to keep the best and the brightest high school graduates in the State by providing scholarships for postsecondary education in Florida (Lolo, 2021).
This program has divided policymakers over its funding, with recent division influenced by Senator Dennis Baxley's proposed bill that aims to limit the number of students who can apply for the scholarship (Dailey, 2021).
