Film-Concept Analysis Paper
Essay Instructions:
This assignment requires you to choose one concept/theory
and apply it to explain some elements of one film from class. For example, if you choose to
explain how “Critical Race Theory” relates to Roma, I expect you to write a paper defining
“Critical Race Theory” as if you are formally presenting those ideas to an interested person
who is not enrolled in this class, and then discuss how that theory is related to the film Roma.
Your paper must be at least 2 pages in length. Thus, you should spend the first page of
your assignment writing about the concept or theory you have selected. Then, in your second
page, you should apply that concept/theory to specific parts of the film you chose. You do
not need to summarize the film – just define your conceptual framework and then cite
elements of the film to make your point.
Regardless of the concept and film you choose, the paper should reflect a solid
understanding of the material you present (think of it as if you are writing an encyclopedia
entry) and a thorough examination of how it relates to the film. These papers must be formal
and well-polished. I am looking for more than a loosely coherent engagement and will grade
for content as I am looking for a specific and detailed description of the concept at hand.
Note that these papers are short. The reason they are short is that a short paper forces you
to write on topic. This emphasis on concision means that you are expected to make each
sentence of your paper count towards explaining your material. Additionally, you are not
allowed to use any direct quotes from the readings, and you will be penalized for
grammatical errors. I want to hear your words, and I expect them to be well thought-out and
presented in a direct fashion. Remember, the point of these papers is to demonstrate to me
as clearly as possible that you can comprehend and explain the material.
The papers should be formatted in 12-point Times New Roman font with one-inch margins.
The only information at the top of the page should be your name and the title of the paper. If
you reference outside material, you must cite everything proper guidelines. This means in
text citations as well as a work-cited page.

Defining Critical Race Theory (CRT)
CRT focuses on the interaction between race and power as well as on such significant aspects as social structures. Developing from the legal scholarship in the early 1970s, CRT claims that racism is not exceptional but rather far more structural and normal. Unlike previous civil rights strategies, which tackled citizenship legal and policy adjustments, CRT destabilizes primary axioms of knowledge, including parity theory and colourless constitutional law (Delgado & Stefancic, 2001). They claim that race is fake, conjured and shifted with the intent to maintain dominance and control over black people and the working class. Famous concepts are such as "interest convergence," which means that reforms are only going to happen where they suit the interests of the dominant groups, and the concept of "Intersectionality," which looks at how multiple forms of oppression work together, for example in the bases of race, class and gender. CRT also singles out 'counter-stories' or narratives that give voice to oppressed cultures. Through this lens, CRT aims not only at the analysis of systemic racism in society but also at the alteration of society's racism.
Applying CRT to Roma
Roma (2018) is a deeply moving drama about a contemporary indigenous woman, Cleo, who works as a domestic help in Mexico in the 1970s. Finally, applying CRT to Roma will show emancipatory possibilities for analyzing other films and groups, as it demonstrates how the film calls attention to systemic racism and class oppression in Cleo's story and setting.
