What is ethnocentrism? How could it negatively impact our work in the human services field?
Ethnocentrism refers to the tendency to view an individual's ethnic or cultural group as superior and judge other groups depending on the standards and values of the individual group. Bizumic et al. (2021) attested that ethnocentrism consists of a solid sense of importance that persons give to their group in a way that the group is important to everything, and everything revolves in that group. It can contribute to biased misunderstandings and perceptions. Ethnocentrism can have a negative impact on the work in the human services sector.
