Introduction

Supervision is the practice base for the profession of applied behavior analysis (ABA) and an essential component in delivering quality services, competent practitioner development, and ethical practice in our profession. Supervision is not simply watching but a structured, evidence-based process of the supervisor delivering direction, instruction, evaluation, and feedback to the supervisee. This document will cover learning resources on ABA supervision, why supervision is necessary, the most critical aspects of supervisory relationship, recognizing when potential issues are present, and problem-solving.

Resources for Information and Supervision Instruction in ABA

There are numerous beneficial websites that offer ABA supervisors important information and direction. The first is the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) Supervisor Training Curriculum Outline (BACB, 2022). This guidebook is a valuable supervisor's guide, providing the subject matter, activities, and learning objectives necessary to establish effective supervisory relationships. The guidebook provides trainees and active service providers with the skills needed to run them, for instance, behavior skills training (BST), performance feedback, ethical compliance, and performance objectives. The course has a structured guidebook which supervisors may utilize and provides evidence-based practices.

Secondly, "Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts" is a seminal set of professional practice (BACB, 2022) that explicitly sets ethical requirements for supervisors, and Standard 4 dealing with supervision standards, training, and professional development; Standard 4.07 bringing forward cultural responsiveness and dealing with diversity, which ensures culturally responsive supervision practice; and Standard 4.07 outlining an explicit ethical decision model that guides supervisors on how to tackle challenging professional issues by laying out clear responsibilities to supervisees and clients, ensuring supervisors maintain professional integrity while ensuring competent practice. The ethical system works to guide supervisors towards good decision making, upholding the reputation of the profession, and maintaining client welfare.

Thirdly, Peer-reviewed journal articles include evidence-based practice and key information, e.g., "Cultural Responsiveness Framework in BCBA Supervision" by Gatzunis et al. (2022) and "Taking Full Responsibility: The Ethics of Supervision in Behavior Analytic Practice" by Sellers et al. (2016). Both articles touch upon cultural sensitivity, practical steps for good supervision, ethical issues, and practicability. Together with the BACB standards, they provide an integrated framework for learning and applying effective supervision practices.
