This briefing gives an overview of a serious organization’s security threat, what the security team has done or plans to do to remediate it, and what partnerships have been leveraged. These days, the business world is more connected than ever, but so are security threats that can disrupt operations and cause loss of income. To security managers, there is a need to be able to identify these threats, their impacts, and initiate a response through internal and external partnerships.
The Threat
A recent report showed that cybersecurity incidents have been some of the most concerning real-world threats to businesses. Ransomware remains one of the biggest threats, as well as data breaches and IT disruption. A faulty update rolled out by CrowdStrike affected tens of millions of machines utilizing Microsoft technology in July 2024 (Sandvik, 2025). Their impact on varied industries from airlines, banks, broadcasters, hospitals, and retail payment terminals revealed not just the incursion but also the vulnerability of our IT security systems. The CrowdStrike incident occurred when a cloud-based security software was poorly updated. It caused a global IT outage of 8.5 million Microsoft Windows devices (Sandvik, 2025). The outage highlighted how all the IT systems people or organizations rely on are interconnected and that failure of one can cause widespread challenges.
Impacts of the Threat
The CrowdStrike outage is multi-faceted and reveals the threat possibility of cyber incidents. Essentially, it is about taking advantage of flaws in software to cause mass disruptions of systems. Such incidents bear multiple impacts. It may disrupt other operations in the zone. If a company goes offline for too long, it will lose production and cash. The cost of the losses depends on the size of the hacks and the types of firms that were attacked (Walters & Novak, 2021). For instance, the airline may delay or cancel a flight, the bank may not process transactions, and the medical service may not access records. Recovering from a cyber incident can be costly and may itself cause the business to lose money through IT repairs, legal services, and fines by regulators. Additionally, companies may have to spend money to fix things for customers hurt by the disruption.
Reputation damage and data breaches are some of the other effects that threats of this kind can trigger. The reputational damage to businesses may take years to reverse, especially customer trust. These days, people want services that are dependable and secure. A major cyber incident can damage a company’s reputation and keep customers away. Due to data breaches, sensitive customer data of a company may get compromised, resulting in legal and financial consequences (SciSec Conference, 2021). When data is stolen, it results in loss of intellectual property, financial data, as well as personally identifiable information that cybercriminals may use for their gain.
Coordinating Internal and External Organizations
To respond efficiently to a cybersecurity threat, coordination with organizations both inside and outside is required. Using intelligence from local law enforcement and union security helps lessen the severity of the threat as a security manager. The IT department has a key role in immediate response to a cyber incident internally. This means that they must try to isolate affected systems so that the threat doesn’t spread to others. They must also deploy patches to vulnerable areas and restart services. Also, IT should conduct investigations to determine the root cause of the incident and implement steps to prevent reoccurrences.
