A person's intentions and messages may be vague and confusing, especially when the receiver does not know how to identify and classify their behaviors. Affection and immediacy are concepts that are interchanged. Both are significant and are used in interpersonal relationships. In some ways, they are similar, but in others, they are vastly different. As a result, distinguishing between them will assist people in grasping a clear meaning and establishing healthier relationships.
Affection and immediacy are two distinct concepts, and people must understand them to avoid miscommunication and confusion. Everyone yearns for and seeks affection. A person desires to love and be loved, to feel valued and cared for. Affection also helps people find a lifetime partner with whom to build a family. Hence, a person requires, provides, and receives affection. On the other hand, immediacy is vague. It is the act of welcoming people and breaking the barriers. Immediacy requires people to interact positively. Both concepts are essential in building harmonious relationships, but they are different. Immediacy helps establish relationships, while affection strengthens relationships (Guerrero et al., 2017). Therefore, a person must identify which concept is being projected to avoid misunderstandings.
Since affection and immediacy are different, these are also used in different relationships. Affection is commonly given and asked from relatives, partners, or close friends. Meanwhile, immediacy is for colleagues, peers, and new persons. Thus, affection is for people with a high level of closeness, and immediacy is for people at the immediacy level (Guerrero et al., 2017). In conclusion, a person's behavior and interaction change depending on closeness.
