Cultural group

Essay Instructions:
Think about the cultural group with which you most closely identify (or, if you use an example that is not a personal one, write about the cultural group with which the person in your example most closely identifies). Write a short essay (1-2 pages) that explores how your identification with this cultural group may “filter” your view of other cultures. Please consider the following: Discuss a difficult, conflictual experience that you (or the person in your example) encountered as a result of your/their filter(s) and/or assumption(s) that you made about another person whose culture you/they perceived as different from your/their own cultural group (as identified in the first part of the instructions). How did you (or the person in the example) react as a result of your filter(s) and/or assumption(s)? What was the outcome? Knowing what you know now, what might have been done differently (by you, or by the person in the example) to more effectively manage the conflict with that person? Remember, this must be connected to what you have learned in this unit! As this is an assignment on moving beyond bias, please ensure your answer addresses every element of the instructions, including what you would do differently now based on what you have learned. Cultural Conflict on Embracing Diversity Student’s Name Institutional Affiliation Course Instructor Date Cultural Conflict: Embracing Diversity Cultural identity is a broad context characterized by various influences, including but not limited to raising personal values, traditions, and experiences. Identifying with a specific cultural group provides a connection and a sense of belonging to most people (Mayer, 2012). As for me, I closely identify with my American heritage, deriving strength and inspiration from its broad and wealthy customs, traditions, and values. Growing up in a household firmly bound to American culture, I was deeply involved in its flavors, rituals, and vibrant colors from a young age. From a young age, I was taught to respect elders, practice hospitality, and value the community and family. As I grew up, these cultural pillars were guiding principles, molding my worldview and influencing how I mingled with others. Identifying myself with the American cultural group not only adds value to my life in many ways but is also a lens through which I interpret and view other peoples’ cultures. This "cultural filter" can manifest differently, shaping my behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes toward people from different backgrounds (Tyner, 2019).
