Introduction
In light of the recent developments relating to the differences in cultural and traditional aspects, which are subject to the globalization levels in the domestic workforce, there is friction. In most of the working environments such as those in the health care centers, the workforce has grown increasingly diverse, as the cultural and political borders are rendered none existent. The war is not won as yet, given that there are differences those results from the differences in culture and traditions (Rivera Mindt, Byrd, Saez & Manly, 2010). This would explain the increase in attention towards the cultural competence studies and policies at the work place. Ideally, the study refers to the ability of the personnel to interact effectively with persons of different cultural backgrounds. Cultural competence is build around four crucial pillars, which include communication, time, calendars and team building. This paper narrows on the aspect of communication; specifically due to a policy introduced at work, requiring all the medical personnel to communicate in the English language regardless of their cultural footing.
Rationale For and Against This Policy
Working in a work environment that is predominantly within a country that uses the English language, it easy to see why a policy requiring the personnel to speak in English at all time. This way passing information is more accurate and not subject to distortion most of the time. At the same time, there is the element of formality at the work place as everyone is using the same language to communicate, mimicking a sense of order. Both the patients and the medical teams have an easier time communicating, due to the level of formality (Saha, Beach & Cooper, 2008). Reporting also becomes easier, as any of the medical personnel can attend to the requirement of a patient’s report.
However, there is also a dark side to having the entire workforce, speaking in English, given that there is quite a majority of personnel from the minority cultures that have been employed of late. This means that most of the members of the minority groups will not only feel unappreciated but also have a sense of being discriminated against. Cultural competence requires that all the personnel understand and respect that aspect of their differences in culture (Rivera Mindt, Byrd, Saez & Manly, 2010). Working with the differences is more productive that working against one another. If the policy goes through, it bound to create conflict among the members of the staff, as those that come from the minority cultures will feel sidelined. Imposing the communication policies especially due to the fact that there is a number of minority staff on board is only going to breed conflict and counter-productive attitudes at work. It is crucial that the differences between the cultures are tolerated but also understood and appreciated (Saha, Beach & Cooper, 2008).
Benefits of Cultural and Linguistic Inclusion
There are several benefits that come from the inclusion of all the linguistic and cultural differences at the work place. All the staffs from the different backgrounds are bound to have increased knowledge due to the fact that they are exposed to different cultural, opinions and traditions. This also means that the skills of the various staffs are broadened to an international level. This will also boost the level of creativity within the workforce as they gain more exposure and skills associated (Kwintessential.co.uk, 2014). As the staffs learn to accommodate their cultural differences, they also build stronger teams meaning that the teamwork aspect is promoted to more productive levels. In its entirety, the inclusion also makes sure that all the staffs are experiencing constant improvement in their personal lives and in the professional quarters (Kwintessential.co.uk, 2014).
