Overview of Intersectional Discrimination As stated in the article, intersectionality allows individuals to comprehend how various aspects, such as race, gender, and class, create even more discrimination. According to Smith (2016), single-axis frameworks of discrimination law are insufficient because they do not capture how these identities intersect. For example, Black women experience dual discrimination based on their race and gender, but traditional analytical systems typically fail to capture the combined effect of these two aspects. The article critiques current models while supporting substantive equality as the preferred solution because it targets structural power systems that create discrimination. The approach to intersectional discrimination moves past the accumulation of different forms of discrimination because it focuses on understanding their interactive effects. Smith (2016) emphasizes the need to support discrimination law through intersectional recognition because this approach gives appropriate legal protection to marginalized individuals who face discrimination from multiple sources.
