Introduction
This paper focuses on analyzing how the main characters demonstrate the intersection of race, class, and gendered identities. Likewise, a detailed discussion on how the characters show the concept of "diversity within blackness" are included in the subsections of this paper. Moreover, the use of drama, suspense, psychological thriller, comedy, satire, or irony is explained as to whether it reinforces or challenge the negative stereotypes of blackness? Furthermore, the geographic location and historical context are also briefly stated in terms of how it shapes the characters’ worldviews. At the end of this analysis, the conclusion will summarize the contents of the paper and how the important points affect the lives of the Blacks and Whites on account of racism and cultural diversity. Jordan Peele is the epitome of a brave, courageous and opinionated director and a Black who is never afraid to show what is right, and what must be justified in correlation to cultural differences and racial discrimination. This paper fervently argues that movies and American shows are prevalent and aggressively persuading people to realize that potential racism still exists at the present period.
Analysis of the Movie and the Rationale in Understanding Racial Discrimination
Williams D.R. (1999), have explained the varying factors of intergroup and intragroup racism which often lead to high rates of morbidity and mortality in the present era and the past. There is a daunting psychological, social, and physiological effects of dangerous racism among African Americans. It destroys lives, downgrades the ability of the Blacks to live a free life and removes equality from the context of living as humanely as possible. Sadly, there are times when the Blacks could not exercise their rights as enumerated by the law by reason of the White Supremacy. This hinders the Blacks from freely exercising their freedom to be liberated from harm and slavery. Jordan Peele’s movie grossed over thirty million on and more on its first few days in the movie houses and became a number one hit for comedy horror category. The story is structured on the interracial relationship of Rose and Chris played by skilled actor and actress Daniel Kaluuya and Allison Williams. The script runs through Chris’ meeting with the woman’s family and revolves on the stigma of racism, violence and injustice against the Blacks. Peele’s sense of humor, wit and extraordinaire plot has kept the audience hooked to the very last minute and end of the movie. According to Zonderman A.B. (2014) that men experienced racial discrimination more frequently than women, in relation to past research indicating that African American men are faced with racial discrimination at a greater frequency than are African American women. Likewise, another research study declares that for the higher reports of experienced racial discrimination amongst men, they are more often faced with more frequent racial discrimination, over which they are exposed to unambiguous actions of racial discrimination while the opposite sex, experience more subtle, types of racial discrimination, making it less likely that women would report undergoing such unfairness. This is exactly what has been depicted in the movie. Chris experienced an awkward, weird and terrifying experience of racism behavior from the parents of Rose. The plots were a little bit exaggerated but the ideas, thoughts and perspective on racial discrimination was there. There is diversity in black since most people strived to overcome the challenges of injustice while others tried to avenged themselves out of hurt, anger and betrayal.
This movie is perfect for narrating what’s actually taking place in real life where Black lives matter and where African Americans are still in danger of violence and inhumane behavior.
The protagonist unknowingly got involved in a diabolic plot which has been planned by his girlfriend’s family. The latter has been involved in a series of missing individuals who are Black and have used hypnotism to control the innocent and guile victims. Beforehand, Chris already had that eerie feel that he was being watched and yet dismissed it on account of complacency and ignorance. This teaches people to never let down their guards and not to trust too much. The narration was created to be extraordinaire by Peeles, the director, building clue after another in every circumstance of the scenes. The film will be better understood if a brief background of Jordan Peele’s life is taken into consideration. He is a talented black man married to a white woman. Thus, most of his convictions are seen in the movie. Pascarella T.E. (2016) explained through accurate research and study that a well-educated African American is less likely to commit crimes and are more intelligent with a broadened understanding of racism, injustice and fair play. They are able to handle terrible situations with a balanced mind and with wisdom.
Obviously, the usage of comedy, satire and irony in this movie has opened a wider perception of what’s happening in the real world. Some Blacks were not even given the privilege to be educated and to study in a decent College. Some do not reach adulthood and die in the streets. In addition, evaluations and assessments from organizations and agencies who cater to the rights of the Blacks show that personal experiences and traumatic encounters of Blacks negatively affects their performance in school, work and personal lives.
Racial discrimination has been so devastating whereby truth be told that some people, or corporations refuse to employ Blacks in their offices. Anderson V. (2017) reiterated that colonialism, slavery and Nazi Aryanism evolved from the same fundamental ideals of racist behavior and narcissistic character. Acevedo Y. (2017) explains that the larger social environment literally contributes to the racial isolation and security of whites as depicted in the movies.
