Instructions • Develop develop a four-part essay which contains the following elements: - Your command philosophy - An interview with a current commander to discuss command challenges - An analysis of challenges with respect to your command philosophy - A plan to maximize your personal strengths and minimize your weaknesses once in command. • Specific instructions for each section are presented in the tabs below. Part 1 – Your Command Philosophy • Synthesize your self-reflection, experience, and the knowledge gained from this course into a personal command/leadership philosophy. This is your approach to command/leading. Reflect on your philosophy and provide supporting rationale from theories, principles and/or experiences that influenced and shaped your thinking. You are expected to use course material to support your work. Part 2 – Command Challenges • Conduct an interview of a squadron (or higher echelon) commander or director. Inquire about their most challenging leadership issue and how they resolved it or how they have dealt with it if it was not resolved. • Write a summary of the interview. Describe what influenced his/her decision-making process, what skills/competencies did they use to resolve or address it, and what was the outcome (personally/organizationally)? Were there any decisions they would change? Did they take criticism (internal or external) for any of the decisions they made? What resources did they use (peers, mentors, values, JAG, etc.)? Part 3 – Analysis • Analyze the situation based on your command/leadership philosophy. How would your philosophy influence your actions if you experienced the same challenge? Defend what would you do differently based on your philosophy. Use theories, principles, and competencies from the course to support your position. Part 4 – Strengths and Weaknesses • Identify and describe at least one of your strengths and one area for improvement. Then think about where you would most be outside your comfort zone as a command/director. How can you capitalize on your strength(s) and make improvements where needed to excel in this area? Introduction
Being in a position of leadership means having the ability to effectively utilize both the human and monetary resources in an organization for its greater good. However, the effectiveness of a leader depends on their leadership philosophy. A great leader should be able to empower others, exhibit humility, have a bias for action, focus on building relationships, garner credibility, and possess a high sense of self-awareness. Although he primary goal of a leader should be to maximize the productivity of the organization, it is important to put some emphasis on the career development of all their employees to foster better relationships. This paper aims to assess my interview with my former commander and give some insights on how I would perform differently in a similar situation using my command philosophy.
My Command Philosophy
My command philosophy for this organization will be the willingness to adapt to changes, show humility and motivation, and lead with purpose. To achieve all the goals and objectives and contribute positively to this organization, I should follow this philosophy as my guide. For the last nine years, I have worked with different leaders in my line of a career in the Air Force. One thing I noted is that every one of these leaders believes in a different philosophy on how the goals of the organization can be attained. Although some of the philosophies employed by some of these leaders have failed, they have helped e gain a new perspective on how to handle different challenges in the organization (Ciulla, 2018). My philosophy is a combination of the results of different philosophies that these leaders and my personal experience in the Air Force have employed.
I believe that humbleness is an integral aspect of any leadership philosophy. A good leader should be willing to listen to their critics because no one leader is too successful or big to receive advice. The most common mistake that most leaders make is to assume that as the leader, they are right all the time and their ideas are superior to those of others. Only a leader who can positively influence how people perceive the organization is to be approachable and willing to listen to suggestions from others (Sriyakul, 2019). People are more willing to contribute to the organization's growth when they feel their input is appreciated. As a leader, it is your responsibility to create an environment where to some degree, everyone in the organization is involved in the decision-making process.
Leading with purpose and motivation is another pillar of my command philosophy. Zaccaro (2018) argues that people only give what they feed from their leaders. As a leader of this organization, it will be my role to give every person a purpose to work hard to collectively achieve the organization's objectives. The best way to give a people purpose is to clearly outline the objectives of the organization and specify the roles that everyone needs to play to achieve the goals. Positive responsiveness to the everyday challenges faced by the organization is also a good way to show purpose as a leader. Motivation is another aspect of my philosophy that I intend to use to move this organization forward. I can motivate people in this organization by recognizing and rewarding the efforts of the best performers in every department. The best way to ensure that this motivational strategy is successful is to ensure that the reward system is fair and equal to every person in the organization.
Adaptability change is another thing that is important to the success of my command philosophy. Due to the rapid and constant changes in technology, the manner in which different processes and tasks are carried out in an organization changes frequently. As a leader, it is important to be open to new ideas through employee training to ensure that the organization's productivity keeps up with the industry's growth (Sriyakul, 2019). Adaptability to change begins with the leader, as no one will be willing to change if it proves to be difficult for the leader to sell the idea to others.
Interview with a Current Commander
I had the chance to sit down and interview my former squadron commander about the various command challenges that they have encountered in their career. The respect informed my choice of commander she commanded in our squadron and my personal experience with her during my time in the Air Force. She outlined the most challenging aspect of her leadership as the tension among active duty technicians, active duty nurses, civilian nurses, and civilian nurses. The tension resulted from the conflicting duties performed by different nurses in the organization, with some feeling that their career progression was hindered. For instance, during my time in this organization, both civilian and active nurses needed help understanding the roles performed by duty technicians. During the interview, I understood that this friction between these two factions came to the commander's attention when deadlines for various duties were missed, and no group was willing to take responsibility. This was also an issue that I experienced first-hand during my time at the Air force. The supervisor of my flight, Mr john Carry was not clear in outlining the duties of every member of our flight. This resulted to tensions among the flight members as no one was certain about their duties in the group. This issue was raised with the commander after we failed to meet a few deadlines. Although this helped solve the issue at hand, it raised more problems between the supervisor and the flight members because the person who reported the challenge to the commander did not go through the supervisor.
