Your Name Course and SectionProfessor’s Name January 11, 2024 Statement for Child Poverty Child poverty is still a major issue in the United States since around 12,472,000 children which is equivalent to 16% of children under the age of 18, live in poverty (U.S. Census Bureau, 2022). Child poverty also has implications beyond simple lack of financial means resulting in health imbalance, education inequity, and social vices. Unfortunately, children below this poverty line also suffer from heightened chronic stress, malnutrition, and delayed development. These are conditions that keep the people else trapped in a poverty trap, which means they can’t transition to a better life characteristic of a middle-class life. From a Christian perspective, the elimination of child poverty satisfies the injunction of the Scriptures to protect the fatherless. Proverbs 31:8-9 forces them to ‘speak up for the ignorant and to plead for the orphans’ and other downtrodden. Here, there is an emphasis on the ethic of responsibility to respond to child poverty and try to solve it with justice as God is just. Such action is not only searching for relief of suffering but also promoting recognition of the invaluable value of every child as the creator’s masterpiece. Bronfenbrenner’s Bio-Socio-Ecological Model Using Bronfenbrenner’s Bio-Socio-Ecological Model of Human Development, the complex interplay of factors at various systemic levels that contribute to child poverty can be analyzed: 1 MicrosystemThis level involves handling issues within the family, among friends, and within close working places. Poor children are likely to have relationship difficulties because parent stress arising out of poverty can reduce interaction and limit the appropriate care and teaching the children need. Added to the above, they do not stay in a permanent house and do not have proper nourishment; this distracts them a lot from achieving their goals. 2 MesosystemThis involves the connections between microsystems, the plane between a child's home and the school system for instance. Parental involvement in education decreases since most families living in poverty standard cannot afford to provide the requirements needed by the child in school usually this leads to low academic performance. For example, parents with jobs to hold down may miss many parent-teacher meetings or even be unable to help with assignments, and this disrupts the all-important home-school nexus vital for academic performance. 3 Exosystem At this level, it involves parental workplaces, local government, and community resources. Lack of proper and cheap child care or food insecurity could make life even harder in poverty for families. When one’s workplace is hostile or pays poorly, the impact usually affects children negatively in the sense that they become less likely to benefit from healthy and supportive childhood environments. 4 Macrosystem This means that it refers to more of what can be regarded as culture, society, and the economy. Child poverty is due to systemic problems such as wage inequality and racism, or lack of adequate social protection mechanisms. The structures imposed by this wider society make it difficult for families to escape poverty and this therefore means that poverty needs structural change. 5 Chronosystem This dimension may address life cycle changes and also perennial phenomena. For example, Such circumstances include economic recessions, or the current pandemic, which result in the worsening of the living standards of poor children. Furthermore, other stresses represented by new events such as parents’ separation, or the death of a caretaker, make it even harder for such children.
