Causes and Solutions to Overcome Bullying (Eng101 wk5SLP)
The Module 5 SLP is an Argumentative essay in which the writer addresses a major issue in society today. Bullying is a pervasive epidemic impacting our society today, sometimes with tragic results, including diminished self-esteem, poor academic performance, and in some cases, school shootings and suicide. Beyond the school yard, bullying lurks within social circles, in the workplace, and beyond. It is suggested that students focus on the causes of (and solutions to overcome) this recent epidemic. To do so, students may wish to identify three causes and three solutions. Be mindful that causes may also very well be solutions. For example, lack of good parenting may be a cause of bullying while quality parenting could certainly be a solution. The same might be said for media and technology or perhaps education/educators. A well-organized essay has a beginning, middle, and an end. The beginning, or introduction, should include an opening sentence to grab your reader’s attention. Follow the opening sentence with a brief background on the topic or situation. In this case, it would be brief summary on the recent epidemic of bullying. The last sentence of the introduction is the thesis statement. The thesis states the main point of the essay, which in this case, would be a statement affirming the paper's focus on the causes of and solutions for overcoming bullying. A well-supported essay includes supporting points, details, and examples. For this essay, you must decide the best way to organize the body of the paper. Will you have six body paragraphs - three for each cause and three for each solution? Will you address causes first and then follow with solutions or will you provide a solution after a discussion of each cause? In any case, each body paragraph must support (explain) your reasoning (rationale) using specific details. Each body paragraph must have a topic sentence that states the main point of the paragraph, which in this case would be each supporting point. This essay must include no less than SIX citations from TWO credible sources in APA Style. Citations are to be a combination of direct quotations and paraphrased quotations with or without the author's name. Credible sources may be from books, magazines, newspapers, online journals, or web pages, though in every case, the source must be credible and reliable. The conclusion typically summarizes the main points of the essay and/or closes with a lasting impression that connects the reader to their world. In this case, where do we go from here? What can your reader do to address this issue? The essay must also include a Reference List that includes the readings quoted in the essay. Be sure to proofread your essay and edit for proper grammar, punctuation, diction (word choice), and spelling, as errors in sentence skills will lower a final grade. A grade will be determined based on the Module 5 SLP expectations and the Trident University General Education rubric for English. Papers must be double-spaced in Times or Times New Roman font (12 cpi) with standard one-inch margins. The first person "I" is not used in a formal essay, nor is the passive "you." In place of "you," "one" may be used. SLP Assignment Expectations •Write an argumentative essay no less than four pages in length that addresses the causes of and solutions for overcoming bullying. •Include an introductory paragraph with thesis statement. •Include body paragraphs (each with a topic sentence that states the point of the paragraph) that support the thesis through examples and details. •Include a conclusion that summarizes the main points of the essay. •Include no less than SIX citations from TWO credible sources in APA format. •Include a Reference List for the sources used in the essay. •Proofread your essay for errors in grammar, diction (word choice), punctuation, and spelling.

Causes and Solutions to Overcome Bullying
Introduction
Bullying is a common social problem that negatively impacts modern societies around the world. According to Adjimi (2014), bullying causes fear on the victims through aggressive or unwanted behaviors. Bullying falls under three categories which include; physical bullying, psychological bullying and verbal bullying. Physical bullying involves physically mistreating someone through fighting them. On the other hand, psychological bullying involves spreading rumors concerning a particular person or excluding them from others. Finally, verbal bullying involves direct insults, which are directed to an individual after a confrontation. Bullies feel superior and thus continuously harass their victims who are perceived as weak. Bullying is common in school set up and also in the community. Individuals who are bullied as small children are more likely to be bullies when they grow up (Adjimi, 2014). There are many negative consequences that result from bullying which include lowered self-esteem, low productivity, depression and suicidal thoughts. This paper looks at the main causes of bullying in the society and the solutions to reduce bullying activities.
Causes of bullying
Reduced empathy towards others
Most of the bullies have no sympathy and they feel happy when other individuals are in pain or are suffering. This originates from increased instances of antisocial behavior in their early ages where they do not constantly interact with others. This behavior makes the bullies have less regard for others and always ignore what they feel whenever pain is inflicted in them (Voors, 2000). The bully thus harasses different victims through fights or abuses. This kind of behavior from bully may be attributed to hostile home environment. This especially happens when the parents are in constant fights before their children. The children follow the behaviors of their parents who act as their role model. Therefore, the children find it fun when they inflict suffering in other children. Parents who fight their children or abuse them most of the time portray a negative image to their children (Voors, 2000). These actions change the perception of children on the value of other people and thus more often mistreat their peers. This happens mostly in school where there are children of different ages.
Need for power
Bullies are individuals who want to feel that they can control the behavior of others and establish their dominance. This is more attributed to physical strength most of the times where the bullies feel they are above all the others. In schools, children who bully others students are recognized by others and this gives the morale to continue bullying (Lickona, 2012). The bullies are considered as heroes by their peers and whenever they carry out bullying; they are celebrated. Through the self-proclaimed power, the bullies feel happy and confident about themselves. The need for more power to control other students may also originate from their family background. Children who are brought up from wealthy families are more likely to bully the less fortunate. The weak children are also a target for the bullies who want to express their power on them.
Need for revenge
This is commonly witnessed in adults who experienced bullying at their earlier age especially during their schooling days. The victims of bullying develop negative attitudes towards people and this may only turn to become bullies later (Boyle, 2005). Hatred develops in the minds of the bullied children and as they grow up; they find sources to direct their hatred. The developed hatred may be directed to their families or to work mates. If directed to the families, the man beats the wife and this may continue for a long time. For ladies who were exposed to bullying they are likely to hate men in general and mistreat any man who comes their way. This may extend to mistreating their children especially when they make mistakes in their families. Bully victims feel they have so much hatred that they must pass to others and they therefore end up bullying others in return.
