Behavioral Insights to Change Gambling Addiction

Essay Instructions:

My preliminary idea is that the final project will look like a policy brief that you will write as a proposal for congress to pass legislation that could create change for the common good, and based on behavioral insights. These policy briefs may end up being individual or in groups but that is still on the table depending on the topics you propose.

In a paragraph, explain a general topic you propose to explore. Think of something in the economy or society that could be changed, that interests you, and that could be changed for the better good. We have discussed some examples in class that can give you ideas, and you will then start doing research about it.

What is the behavior that is causing the problem today? Elaborate on where is this behavior observed and maybe some statistic that can support your point. (Classical examples of behaviors that generate problems today: people do not inform themselves well and fully about their options when voting; people do not save early enough for their pension).

What would be a visible and verifiable change of behavior that could create an improvement in the better good.

Based on what we have already covered in the class, what are behavioral insights that could be explored to explore ways of changing such behaviors. Notice, one thing is to use behavioral insights and another is the kind of actions or policies. For instance, proposing a nudge is one possibility, but a new regulation, a new tax, and new subsidy, and new prohibition, a new investment are all options of acting for the common good, and the question is if the proposed policy is based on sound behavioral insights.

Question1: What is the behavior change that needs to be addressed in the society today?
Answer: The general topic discussed in this proposal is gambling addiction. This is a common practice in society, and gambling takes so many ways, not just football betting. The current young society is obsessed with becoming successful in life, and they end up trying some ways which may give them short-term achievements but will cost them in the long run (Esparza-Reig et al., 2021). Although this proposal is focused on an individual, the results will also be effective if there is a desire to end gambling addiction as a group, especially in circumstances where they are both addicted to the same gambling practices.
Question2:What is the behavior that is causing the problem today?
The behavior causing the gambling problem is the desire to predict an outcome of an event that will occur in the future. The behavior involves researching the item one wants to gamble on and finding the best odds to stake their finances (Gunter, 2019). The behavior has been observed mostly among the youths and spreads among peers with the same financial status. While several rich persons participate in gambling, their motive for gambling is different from the majority of the low-income earners who engage in gambling. The high-income individuals in society engage in gambling as a leisure activity, and they are not worried about how much money they lose because it is small (Cherkasova, 2020). However, low-income earners participate in gambling as a form of generating income.
Question3:What would be a visible and verifiable change of behavior that could create an improvement in the better good?
The visible and verifiable change to the gambling practice would see fewer youths participating in sports as a leisure activity rather than a form of income. Sports fans would be actively supporting their teams to win the title rather than wanting to win a bet. Another change that would be visible is the change in the way of thinking by the youths. The youths will change from trying to find shortcuts to getting rich...
