The work-family and work-life issues are becoming an increased concern in many companies and working places around the globe. So many discussions have been raised and made regarding the implications of the poor work-life for both individuals as well as the society (Wharton, 2006). The balancing of work and family life for every individual may depend on the work-life balance, since it specifically refers to how families and work influence as well as intersect each other. Numerous policies have been suggested and implemented to try intervening in bringing work contentment in employees through creating balance between family and work.

Some of the policies have been included in many companies to enable the employees who are also parents to have adequate time with their families as well. The initial intentions were good although not many companies especially in the highly competitive contemporary world embrace all of these policies. The policies may include Parental leave, which was aimed at offering the employees who may be parents the right to take ample time off work, and take care of a child or making arrangements for the welfare of a child. The employees are usually supposed to take parental leave in spending adequate time with their young children as well as striking a balance between their family and work commitments. In addition, another important policy is known as paternity leave which is meant to offer eligible employees or parents the statutory right of leaving to take care of the child or even support the mother. This kind of leave takes place after a child is born or the matching as well as positioning of a baby for adoption. However, this policy may bear conditions such as having a single phase of the paid paternity leave for each employee regardless of the birth of more than one baby from the same pregnancy.
The Adoption leave is supposed to be provided for employees that are in full employment, depending on company’s policy, to receive a reasonable continuous time for adoption leave. This may happen after a parent has been newly matched with a certain baby for adoption through an approved adoption organization. Most companies may also require that the specific employee would have worked for a reasonable time before requesting for the leave.
