Essay Instructions:

The play Hamlet is often taught in U.S. English classes. “Shakespeare in the Bush” recounts an experienced anthropologist’s attempt to tell the story of Hamlet to Tiv elders in Nigeria. What does Bohannan learn about the universality of human nature? What were some major points of Hamlet that the Tiv elders interpreted differently than Bohannan and why did they think these parts of the play were important? What do Tiv responses to Hamlet tell you about Tiv culture and differences between their culture and your own? How have the Tiv elders’ interpretations enhanced, or added to, your understanding of Hamlet? Cite both the Bohannan article and your text book with page numbers.
