Q: In an essay between three and five pages, identify specific advance activities performed by the USSS for the Baton Rouge LSU graduation commencement trip of President Bush that are appropriate for executive protection specialists and a private personal protection detail to conduct, and those that are not appropriate or possible.
The United States Secret Service (USSS) undertook various measures to improve security before LSU graduation with President Bush in attendance. The Secret Service prioritized thorough preparation to protect the president, the office and senior officers of his government. The Service focuses on the likelihood that the enemy can launch surprise attacks and the service men cannot afford to underestimate the threat that they pose. While all secret service people go through rigorous tests they should be well prepared to meet the demands the task of protecting and securing the areas that the president visits.
To offer high-level protection, the Secret Service works together with other branches of the intelligence community that deal with threat assessment, electronic monitoring, intelligence gathering and tacking services. Even before the arrival of the President, the agents had already started working with the local law enforcement to improve security assessment to improve security. The tracking center is important in monitoring people moving in and outside the Whitehouse and helps in the graduation as there are joint operations that offer security and protection to the president and his family. Weeks prior to the President’s visit to LSU planning activities included mitigating risks and tackling the possibility of threat.
As the agents met with law enforcement this facilitates planning, and the execution of such plans as is the case of LSU. Additionally, some of the snipers are positioned to improve security and protections they can deal with threats from different positions. The thorough preparation before appearance highlight the efforts are undertaken to minimize the risk of threats and security lapses (Bennett, 201). As such, thorough vetting of guests and especially those who are scheduled to meet the president is part of the preparation effort that are prioritized prior to the commencement speech.
The requirement of permanent protection has meant that each threat is investigated and this was part of the routine practice where potential threats and vulnerabilities are identified. This extends to forensic information, that allows the USSS to identify individuals who they suspect pose a threat (Thompson, 2004).
