Challenging behaviors are habits that are difficult to manage and that can negatively impact individuals and those around them. Challenging behaviors may include self-injury, noncompliance, and other types of behavior that interfere with daily activities and social interactions (Fisher et al., 2021). Challenging behaviors can be observed in patients with developmental disabilities and cognitive health conditions resulting from environmental factors such as stress and unmet needs.
There are several functional analyses used to understand and manage such behaviors. Some of them include Direct Functional Analysis (DFA) which determines behavior's function by directly manipulating environmental variables to observe the resulting changes in behavior; Indirect Functional Analysis (IFA) to determine behavior's function through indirect observation and assessment in natural settings; and Comprehensive Functional Analysis (CFA) which integrates information from multiple sources to understand a challenging behavior and its function completely.
