One of the most compelling examples of applied social psychology is illustrated by the story found in the movie Remember the Titans (2000). This movie centers on intergroup conflict, the reduction of prejudice, and leadership to successful action amidst enduring social change. It takes place in 1971 Alexandria, Va., when two high schools, one Black and one White, are integrated and their football teams amalgamate. Herman Boone, the recently appointed head coach, and Bill Yaost, the new white assistant coach of the school, team up to battle the racial diversity faced by the football squad as they work towards achieving a perfect season. This analysis looks at Remember the Titans to explore a number of social psychological constructs, including the contact hypothesis, ingroup bias, transformational leadership, and social dilemmas to show how co-operation and common identity can undermine prejudice.
Interpersonal Relationships
The relationship between team captains Gerry Bertier, who is White, and Julius Campbell, who is Black, has been described as the emotional and social center of the film's message about combating racial prejudice. This shift can be understood in terms of Verkuyten et al. (2022) contact hypothesis, a key theoretical statement on friendship and attraction. Contact hypothesis suggests that under certain conditions, intergroup contact can reduce prejudice. Boone, engineered a situation that helped create those optimal conditions when he made the players share housing and work out together during grueling pre-season camp. Though marked by animosity to begin with, the enforced co-reliance ended up enabling Gerry and Julius to break free from their racial stereotypes and form an authentic friendship based on mutual appreciation. This turn is crystallized when Gerry says to Julius: “I was afraid of you, man. All I could see was what I was scared of. And I hated my brother." This discovery makes it clear how the forced interaction also led to shared experiences that overcame years of cultural discrimination and resulted in a true fraternal friendship.
Teamwork Dynamics
The transformation of the Titans from two groups to one is a case study both for good teams and problem teams. The implementation of superordinate goals was the main tool that drove Titan’s success. A superordinate goal refers to a goal that cannot be achieved by a single group acting alone; it requires the cooperation of two or more groups (Verkuyten et al., 2022). Coach Boone has one over-arching goal for a perfect season and a state victory. This task took priority over all other personal and racial disputes. For example, Gerry and Julius were able to communicate with each other about what they were doing, and this was important for their defensive success.
