Unfortunately, not all children move through this period easily; some are teased and even bullied, which can impact healthy social-emotional development. Peers continue to be important in adolescence and often serve as crucial bridges between the family and adult social roles (Berk, 2022). During this time, adolescents are on a journey to discover an identity that is separate from their family. The focus of this discussion is on peer acceptance and rejection in middle childhood and identity development in adolescence.

“Factors Contributing to Peer Acceptance and Rejection and How Parents and Educators Can Promote Peer Acceptance”
The peers’ acceptance or rejection in childhood is associated chiefly with adequacy in social relationships, an excellent physical appearance, a high academic achievement, and a stable temperament. Children who are friendly, cooperative, and empathetic are likely to be highly acceptable among their friends, but those who are aggressive and withdrawn are likely to be excluded or even rejected by their peers (Berger et al., 2020). To ensure peer acceptance is upheld among school peers, parents and teachers should be tasked with rearing brilliant social skills, endorsing positive interactions, instilling empathy, and designing a community that is tolerant of others (Delgado et al., 2022). Through proactive involvement in these disciplines, grown-ups can create nurturing surroundings where it should not matter if the child's peers feel good or bad; the ultimate goal is empowering one's child to grow holistically and be self-confident.Top of Form
