Behaviorism in psychology focuses on manipulating the environment to cause a change of behavior in a subject. According to behaviorists, thought is not involved in learning. Instead, people are programmed to learn through their experiences and their interaction with the environment. Constant exposure to particular environmental stimuli causes a person’s behavior to change. According to the American Psychological Association (2016), all behaviors are developed through conditioning. After proper reinforcement and punishment, there is a change in observable behavior, which results from exposure.
