READING AND RESOURCES
In the reading for this week, you will learn about young adulthood, now referred to as emerging adulthood. This is a stage of life where individuals begin to embrace their independence, discover and engage in new opportunities, and move from a focus on oneself to relationships that may lead to such things as significant partner relationships, marriage, children and the establishment of professional stable career paths. Two key markers of emerging adulthood are economic independence and independent decision-making, which significantly impact many other life choices and behaviors in this developmental stage. They are also important areas where human service professionals can provide assistance.

To prepare for this discussion, review "Exhibit 8.1: Levinson's eight stages of adult development" (found on page 351 in your text) and watch the two videos that focus on the transition out of foster care and some of the new federal programs that are supporting young adults during this transition.

Identify which life stage you are in and discuss if it is accurate to your present life circumstances. Why or why not?
My age reveals that I am within the young adulthood life stage. Ashford et al. (2018) define this group as individuals aged 23 to 39. An assessment of my present circumstances and achievements confirms the accuracy of belonging to such a category for several reasons, including selecting a partner and becoming a parent to two girls. Moreover, I have a defined lifestyle complemented by values that have enabled me to choose appropriate relationships. Thus, these advances are a reflection of this life stage.
Identify at least three specific challenges that young adults who are aging out of the foster care system face.
The video resources in this course indicate the diverse challenges that young adults transitioning from the foster care system encounter in society. According to CBS Mornings (2020), these individuals face homelessness, unemployment, and substance abuse issues. Miznazi (2022) highlights similar problems while exploring the complex lives of these individuals beyond their foster institutions. The auth...
