SCENARIO: Monica is a single mom who has a 16-year-old son named Jordan. Monica and Jordan were close at one point. As of late, Monica has been noticing that Jordan spends a lot of time focusing on what his friends think about him. Without his mother’s permission, Jordan recently crawled out of his bedroom window and went to a party when he was supposed to be studying for an exam. Upon his return home, Jordan reeked of alcohol and marijuana and was caught by his mother. Shocked and appalled by her son's recent behavior, she grounded him for two weeks.
What advice would you give Monica about her son’s recent behavior?

Question 1: What happens inside the brain of a teenager that makes it difficult for Jordan to weigh the risks and rewards of his behavior? Describe how the adolescent brain weighs risk and reward.
The teenage brain does experience tremendous change and development that obstructs the capability of a teenager to weigh the risks against the rewards of something that they are about to do. This obstruction occurs when the prefrontal cortex, which caters to complicated mental functions, is still developing (Abbott, 2021). In the meantime, the limbic system is incredibly active. The limbic system is responsible for emotional and reward-seeking behaviors (Abbott, 2021). Consequently, the resulting imbalance may account for the increased reliance on emotional and reward-based impulses that encourage teenagers to act on something more than considering the possible outcomes of their actions. Moreover, an adolescent's mind is genuinely susceptible to social hints, including peer pressure, which can easily mask their risk-reward computations (Cervone & Pervin, 2022). They are usually attracted to peers and may be significantly influenced, possibly because of dramatic changes that take place in the domain of social and emotional development.
