The teenage brain does experience tremendous change and development that obstructs the capability of a teenager to weigh the risks against the rewards of something that they are about to do. This obstruction occurs when the prefrontal cortex, which caters to complicated mental functions, is still developing (Abbott, 2021). In the meantime, the limbic system is incredibly active. The limbic system is responsible for emotional and reward-seeking behaviors (Abbott, 2021). Consequently, the resulting imbalance may account for the increased reliance on emotional and reward-based impulses that encourage teenagers to act on something more than considering the possible outcomes of their actions.
