Self-Management Plan Using Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT)

Essay Instructions:

Identify a behavior you would like to change using self-management. It can be one of your own behaviors or a hypothetical behavior. Identify the behavior targeted for change and describe how self-management can be used to change a behavior. Then, create a self-management plan to change your behavior; include all of the following:

Define the target behavior to be changed using a 1-2 sentence operational definition. List competing behaviors.

Set your goal.

Develop your self-monitoring plan. How will you collect data on the behavior?

Functional assessment: Offer your interpretation of what the antecedents and consequences are for the target behavior and competing behaviors. If the target behavior is a behavior excess you are hoping to decrease, what do you think is currently controlling the behavior (e.g., what antecedent and what reinforcer)? If the target behavior is a behavior deficit you are hoping to increase, what antecedents need to cue the behavior and what consequences need to reinforce it?

Choose appropriate self-management strategies. Include one antecedent intervention and one contingency-based intervention.

A description of how you will evaluate your plan and what you will do if your self-management strategies do not work.

A hypothetical behavior I would like to change is to quit smoking. My goal is to quit smoking using nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and a plan for managing urges by the end of July 2023. Daily I will track my tobacco usage and my smoking triggers in my journal as a way to collect data on my behavior. I will also join a tobacco cessation program and start an exercise program to walk briskly for two hours daily as a coping mechanism (Piper et al., 2020). I will also remind myself that I am happy not utilizing tobacco and that life is much better minus it. My antecedents are being around other tobacco users and when I am alone or bored. Thus, the consequence is to smoke because I get the urge (Cooper et al., 2020). After all, I am around smokers, which turned into a habit. I want to quit because the social pressure to stop smoking from my loved ones is all around me. Also, I will make cost savings if I quit because I will save money I spend on buying nicotine products and the healthcare costs of treating tobacco-related illnesses. Therefore, my self-management strategies which include an antecedent intervention, include using NRT instead of tobacco.
