The most compelling side of the argument of repressed memories is that such memories exist and can be retracted from the unconscious mind to the conscious mind. This argument is correct as there are several instances where individuals have entirely forgotten about a traumatic event but remember it whenever they experience a situation that reminds them of it (Otgaar et al., 2019). This tendency explains the advice that individuals trying to overcome a bad habit receive, to avoid triggers that will retrieve the repressed memories. For example, when an alcoholic tries to overcome their habit, they repress their memory of the good feeling that alcohol elicits with the hope that they will eventually forget it and thus overcome the craving....
