Carducci et al. (2020) indicate that Ericksen theorized these stages through the viewpoint that ego development highlights a person’s healthy personality and capacity to become creative, joyful, and reason logically. Such an ego arises as an individual resolves the natural social crises distributed throughout their life. As a result, Ericksen conceptualized and organized the eight stages assumed to transpire sequentially, with the subsequent one depending significantly on the successful completion of the former. Completing each stage leads to the development of character strengths fundamental in the life phase, while failure may trigger inadequacy. Carducci et al. (2020) reveal that the stages represent a lifespan model of healthy personalities in individuals. Thus, interviewing and observing different individuals as they navigate various aspects of life demonstrates the applicability of Erickson’s stages. The first interviewee, H.L., a nine-year-old in her elementary school period, was an appropriate candidate for exploring Erickson’s stages of psychosocial development. Interactions with her reveal her confidence and her determination to demonstrate capability in expressing herself eloquently. She spoke openly and even rephrased the interview questions by asking whether she should discuss her performance in school more. Her responses confirm ongoing academic excellence and her ability to establish and maintain friendships with her peers in school.
