Both mentally taxing and intellectually stimulating, the psychological problem of suicidal ideation can have a tragically fatal outcome. Several therapy approaches or modalities may be required to address this issue thoroughly. People struggling with suicidal ideation often receive psychological treatment from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical-behavioral therapy (DBT). CBT teaches people how to identify and alter their destructive habits of thought and action (McPherson et al., 2020). However, DBT focuses on coping with powerful emotions that can contribute to suicidal ideation through developing emotional regulation and social skills.
Individual circumstances should be considered while deciding on a course of treatment. Biomedical techniques are helpful when diagnosing and treating a mental health condition that requires medication. However, combining biological medications with individual counseling is often the most effective treatment option (Martinez-Martin, 2023). Clients in individual therapy can explore the origins of their suicidal ideation in a confidential setting and actively engage in the development of coping strategies.
