ABA is a treatment based on the scientific research of learning and behavior.
Key Characteristics of ABA
ABA is marked by seven dimensions brought out by Baer, Wolf, and Risley in 1968 (Fisher et al., 2021). They include:
Applied: ABA focuses on socially significant behaviors and improves the quality of life for the individual and their families.
Behavioral: ABA is focused on the measurement and observation of natural behaviors and not verbal reports or perceptions.
Analytic: ABA is based on empirically demonstrating a functional relationship between interventions and behavioral changes.
Technological: ABA requires that procedures and interventions be adequately described so that others can replicate them (Fisher et al., 2021).
Conceptually Systematic: The ABA interventions are conceptually based on founded principles of behavior and behavior theories.
Effective: Interventions using the ABA model must affect or create a behavior change that is important to the person and society.
Generalization: ABA aims to have behavior changes, and its effects endure over time and transfer across different settings, situations, and persons (Fisher et al., 2021).
