PS515 U2 ASSIGNMENT
Essay Instructions:
PS515-1: Describe scientific methods and theoretical bases of learning.
When you are helping clients, it is important to possess an understanding of the theory behind the work that you are doing. It is also useful to have a working knowledge of scientific methods, even if you do not plan to be a researcher. For example, teachers and therapists often use scientific methods in their work.
For this assignment, you will write a 2- to 3-page essay that explains how you would describe theories of learning and use scientific methods.
Describe each of the five schools of behaviorism; make sure you distinguish each from the other schools of thought.
Next, select one of the following potential studies:
Identify 4-year-old Amanda’s dysfunctional behaviors in preschool.
Determine whether LED or fluorescent light changes the students’ science quiz scores in Mr. Johnson’s sixth-grade class.
Identify whether giving Lauren chocolate increases her participation in gym class.
Another behavior of your choosing — check first with your instructor.
After selecting your study, be sure to do the following:
Determine the most appropriate methodology (from this unit) with which to investigate it.
Identify the method and set up an outline of a study; identify any variables.
Explain your rationale for choosing that method.
Discuss which theory of behaviorism is most related to your study and how it is related.
Discuss how biological preparedness/innate learning influences the subject’s ability to learn the behavior.
Your assignment should be a 2- to 3-page essay, not including the title and reference pages, and should include the following elements:
Title page: Provide your name, title of assignment, course and section number, and date.
Body: Answer all the questions in complete sentences and paragraphs.
Your responses should reflect professional writing standards, using proper tone and language. The writing and writing style should be correct and accurate and reflect knowledge of skills and practice of the psychology profession.

Understanding Behaviorism and Scientific Methods in Learning
Understanding how behavior is learned is essential for effective practice in psychology and education. Five prominent schools of behaviorism methodological, neobehaviorism, cognitive behaviorism, social learning theory, and radical behaviorism present a variety of explanations and ways of changing behavior. These schools have informed the contemporary use of learning theory in research and practice.
John B. Watson developed methodological behaviorism, which emphasized observable behavior only. Watson believed that psychology should not encompass internal mental processes since measuring these scientifically was impossible (Powell et al., 2022). Watson believed that everything is learned by interacting with the environment.
Clark Hull's neobehaviorism extended this base by adding internal intervening events, including drives and motives. These intervening variables had to be operationally defined and attached to observable actions (Powell et al., 2022). Hull had a strong stimulus-response orientation while also recognizing the role of physiological states.
Edward Tolman's cognitive behaviorism progressed further in the direction of cognitive psychology. Tolman put forth the "cognitive maps" theory, which revealed that organisms can create mental representations of their worlds (Powell et al., 2022). Tolman's theory focused on purposive behavior and proved that learning was possible even without immediate reward, as indicated in his experiments on latent learning in rats.
Albert Bandura's social learning theory focused on observational...
