Biological predispositions refer to the conditions under which organisms are well equipped to form certain relationships rather than others. They are crucial in classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and conditioned taste aversions since they link learning processes to an organism's basic needs. Recognizing how biological preparedness plays out in these learning forms helps show evolutionary biology's effect on behavior.
Biological Preparedness in Classical Fear Conditioning
Many models can be used to explain classical fear conditioning, but biological preparedness is well known to be an essential factor. This is why animals are predestined to react in fear when they relate certain stimuli like sound or sight to dangerous situations because it is related to their evolution. People fear certain stimuli because, in history, such stimuli could be hazardous for their lives, for instance, predators or certain environmental factors (Åhs et al., 2018). For example, rats can be conditioned to develop a fear of a tone in combination with an electric shock. This association happens because sounds such as a tone may signify a threat, and an imminent reaction is necessary for the survival of the rat. However, the rat cannot associate the light with a shock because lights are not as significant to the rat as sounds are to humans. This draws attention to the biological learning readiness that facilitates an ability to learn in order to survive.
