Models of Psychopathology First Name, Middle Initial(s), Last Name Purdue University Global PS440 - Unit 3 Assignment Date Models of Psychopathology Mental illness, maladjustment, abnormal brain functioning, psychopathology, and emotional disturbance can adversely influence an individual’s life. Every human encounters stigmatizing situations or problems. However, sometimes it becomes challenging to cope with them without assistance from health professionals, which can significantly affect a person’s behaviors and interactions with others. Psychopathology involves the scientific study of mind disorders or problems, including their causes, signs, diagnoses, explanations, treatments, and assessments (Comer & Comer, 2023). This paper uses various psychopathology models, such as biological, sociocultural, psychodynamic, humanistic-existential, cognitive-behavioral, and developmental models to illustrate the given case. Chosen Case Scenario The selected case is from the textbook, and it involves a 23-year-old Mexican American, Jorge. Jorge reported to a hospital’s emergency room after Bella, his sister, called for assistance, saying that her brother was contemplating ending his life (Comer & Comer, 2023). When Jorge met a psychiatrist, he said that he was not interested in moving out of his house since he was not ready to face scary things. The patient had lost his job at the bookstore after he quit, citing that his boss was about to fire him for taking numerous sickness leaves. As such, Jorge said that due to the fear of running out of money, he ate once or twice daily. However, based on what Jorge shared, his problems began during his childhood. His parents pushed him too hard, thinking that they were preparing him to acquire relevant business skills so that he would take over the family business after his father retired. The most annoying experience was when Jorge’s father gave him some money, after he dropped out of business school and told him that unless he returned to school, he would not get any further financial assistance from them. Notably, this case depicts life situations that can push someone to depression, anger, and anxiety. The Biological Model In Jorge’s case, several biological factors might have caused his psychopathologic condition. For example, genetic inheritance from his family lineage. The case reveals that Jorge’s sister suffered from depression and was hospitalized so that she could get psychiatrist help. In addition, the human body needs a balanced diet to facilitate optimal functioning. However, Jorge appears to have decreased his food intake after losing his job since he was afraid that he would run out of money and have no one to assist him. The patient admitted that he experienced symptoms, including sweating, shaking of hands, and dizziness, which he perceived to be related to a heart attack. However, since Jorge did not want to be shocked if his thoughts were right, he did not seek any medical assistance....
