Civil commitment is an approach that ensures individuals who are not acquiring treatment for mental illness obtain those services. Persons in various state hospitals via civil commitment require physical 24-hour care because they are a danger to themselves or others. I have opted for the topic of civil commitments, particularly on civil commitment for dangerousness to self or others. One of the prominent cases is that of John Hinckley Jr., who tried to kill US President Reagan in 1981 (Vargas, 2024). Hinckley's case is representative of the interplay between the legal system and mental illness, especially in terms of civil commitment. The victim was allegedly looking for fame to impress actress Jodie Foster, with whom he had a fixation. Later, Hickley was declared not guilty because of insanity reason and remained under psychiatric treatment and evaluation at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Washington, D.C.
