Interactions with the environment condition one's behavior, and behaviorists claim that constant exposure to a specific stimulus defines our actions (Hergenhahn & Henley, 2013). Thus, behaviorism is the theory that human and animal behavior is acquired through conditioning, and thought or feelings are not involved. Some critical concepts of behaviorism include learning through association and rewards and punishments. Learning through association translates to how a subject develops a response following exposure to a particular stimulus. For example, according to Ivan Pavlov, ringing a bell was a stimulus that caused a salivating reaction in dogs (Akpan, 2020). Conditioning of the behavior ensured that even when food was not presented, and the bell rang, the dog could still salivate. Rewards and Punishments are meant to reinstate the behavior or reverse it. When desirable behavior arises after an action, reinstating it through rewards is advisable. However, when the acquired behavior is undesirable, punishment prevents it from happening again.
