Positive Reinforcement Positive reinforcement is a way of increasing the probability that an action will be repeated by providing positive reinforcers following the activity (Cooper et al., 2020). Such an example is reinforced practice, where the teacher gives verbal praise to process the students' behaviors. For instance, when a student has completed his assignments on time, a teacher may apply the strategy and compliment them. Other students would be encouraged to complete the following assignments similarly. Another example is a token economy system that is implemented to enable students to earn tokens to engage in class discussions or help out (Discussion Board Lecture, n.d.). The earned tokens are redeemed for preferred items or privileges, such as extra recess or a small toy. The reinforcement is visible via the material reward of the token economy system. Negative Reinforcement Negative reinforcement is when an aversive stimulus is taken away post-occurrence of behavior to increase the likelihood of that particular behavior occurring in the future. For example, a teacher can implement the technique to remove a homework assignment if the class behaves well throughout the week. The teacher removed homework to reinforce the quiet and focused behavior of the students in class. The result would be increased performance in class work and less noise through negative reinforcement. An additional example is if a student is consistently done with their work early, a teacher applies the strategy by giving the student a release of class a couple of minutes early.
