I recently worked with Lois, a student of Asian descent, to make her school and social life more comfortable. The presentation will adhere to ethical responsibilities and base its foundation on relevant research. The case involved teaching Lois to maintain at least 3s of eye contact with adults. This technique will help her to have a better school life and enhance her social interactions. During the sessions with Lois and interactions with her instructional team, guidelines from the Ethics Code of Behavior Analysts were used. Specifically, codes from section 5 and section 6 were valuable in planning and implementing this strategy. Section 5 focuses on responsibility in public statements. Behavior analysts should know the right information to be shared and the necessary protocols to observe in that process. Section 6 focuses on responsibility in research (Behavior Analyst Certification Board, 2024). Specific laws and regulations must be adhered to in any behavioral analysis research. Section 5 Ethics codes from Section 5 of the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (2024) relevant to Lois’ case include 5.01 (protecting the rights of clients, stakeholders, supervisees, and trainees), 5.02 (confidentiality in public statements), and 5.03 (public statements by behavior analysts). The BCBA is preparing to present at the coming Purdue Global ABA conference. Seeking permission from Lois’ parents is a commitment to respecting the cultural backgrounds of critical stakeholders. The BCBA also consulted Lois’ parents on how their culture viewed eye contact. The information shared at the conference must not reveal Lois’ identity or personal details. Confidentiality in public statements is achieved by using pseudonyms, anonymizing data, and avoiding disclosing specific personal details (Normand & Donohue, 2023). Moreover, the BCBA must ensure that all public statements are accurate, truthful, and not misleading. This transparency helps maintain the credibility of the BCBA and the field of behavior analysis. To ensure adherence to the relevant ethics codes from Section 5, the BCBA should implement several key strategies. First, all communication with Lois’ parents regarding their consent to Lois’ case use in the presentation should be documented. The BCBA will also constantly communicate with Lois's parents before and after the presentation. Second, the BCBA should thoroughly review all the presentation materials to ensure they comply with ethical standards. The review should focus more on maintaining confidentiality throughout the presentation materials. Moreover, the presentation should bring out both the successes and limitations of the implementation plan. This will ensure that the presentation is truthful and not misleading (Contreras et al., 2021). These should also be discussed openly if there were any difficulties or areas where the intervention did not achieve the desired outcomes. A comprehensive presentation that maintains confidentiality and provides transparent information about the intervention will ensure adherence to these codes from sections 5 and 6.
