- Organization goals are often tied to mission and vision statements. These goals help us understand what is important and what direction the profession is headed. They also help us understand how our future career development goals fit in with the “Big Picture” of our profession. Most organizations create goals for individual employees/members (standards, guidelines, core values) designed to help meet strategic goals. Therefore, it is critical that organization goals align with the employee/member goals. If organization and employee goals are linked and in sync, the “Big Picture” mission and vision are more likely to be achieved.

C. PerformanceGoals
- Performance goals are results-based statements of important ongoing job responsibilities and competences and include measurable standards and/or a level of performance needed to reach the outcome. These goals focus on achieving both on-task performance and the end result. To be effective, it is important that performance goals are clearly defined and easy to measure.
- What are specific measurable professional competencies that will be needed to achieve the organizational goal? Key performance outcomes you will need to achieve as future/current professional? Write these as ‘results-based statements’ based on future job responsibilities or competences.
D. Professional Development Goals / Process Goals
- Professional development goals (written as process goals) are focused on increasing your competencies and individual capabilities through education, learning, training opportunities; as well as developing new habits. These goals can be related to learning new skills, obtaining new degrees or certifications, getting more experience in a certain area, and aiming for any other aspirations related to advancing your career. Professional development can be obtained through coursework, workshops, conferences, webinars, videos, coaching, mentoring, practical experience, etc.

A. Outcome Goal – A College Lacrosse Coach
My ultimate career goal as a college lacrosse coach is to be a division one college Lacrosse coach. I want to achieve this within the next five years. Along the way, I also hope to establish myself as a respected coach within the lacrosse community, build a successful program, and develop my coaching skills to the point where I can help players reach their full potential.

As a lacrosse coach, I am aware of the "Big Picture" goals and values. I want to ensure that my career goals align with the mission and vision of the organizations I am associated with.
