Effects of the Pandemic to Different Groups of Different Ages

Essay Instructions:

You can use data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) website to do a mini-paper of 2 pages with a table showing how the pandemic has differentially affected the employment of certain groups. You could do a breakdown by one or more of the following characteristics:

Gender

Race

Ethnicity

Age group

Disability

Education

You could possibly combine these characteristics in your preferred breakdown—e.g., Blacks who are 20-24 years old compared to whites who are 20-24 years old.

For whatever breakdown you choose (e.g., women compared to men, or high school graduates compared to college graduates), you should pick one of the following indicators:

Labor force participation rate

Total employed

Employment-population ratio

Employed full-time

Unemployment rate

For this indicator, construct a table with the monthly numbers since January 2020, then calculate a percentage change for each group to see which group has had the largest change since then.

You can find the monthly data either in tables that BLS has constructed, or retrieve the data using the BLS tool. A good place to start is: https://www(dot)bls(dot)gov/cps/demographics.htm Links to an external site.. You can see access to published tables, or retrieve data by clicking “Retrieve historical data series.” You may also be able to find the breakdowns you’re looking for at these links:

https://www(dot)bls(dot)gov/cps/#dataLinks to an external site.

Along with the table you should provide a short description of how you got the data, what the main results are, and any thoughts you may have on the importance of the differences you find and whether and how they should be addressed.
